Little Island: NYC’s Floating Park You Didn’t Know Existed

In a city known for concrete and steel, Little Island feels like something out of a dream. This whimsical park floats above the Hudson River on giant tulip-shaped pillars — and yes, it’s real.

A Park That Floats

Little Island is built on 132 concrete “pots” that rise from the river, creating rolling green hills above the waterline. Opened in 2021, it’s part park, part sculpture, and 100% unique to NYC.

You’ll find winding paths, lookout points, native plants, and hidden amphitheaters — all packed into just 2.4 acres. It’s peaceful, playful, and totally walkable in under 20 minutes (but you’ll want to stay longer).

Where Art, Nature, and Architecture Collide

This isn’t just a spot to relax — it’s a place designed for performances, public art, and city views. The island hosts free shows in its amphitheater, pop-up music, and even dance performances under the stars.

It was designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick (same guy who did The Vessel at Hudson Yards), and it’s one of the coolest modern additions to NYC’s west side.
