NYFE Summary
Wave Hill’s houses served several families before the estate became a public garden. Mark Twain rented Wave Hill House and used a treehouse as a writing retreat. Later resident Bashford Dean, an arms and armor collector, added the room now known as Armor Hall.
The Perkins family developed the grounds and helped protect the Palisades across the Hudson from quarrying. The river view was part of their plans for the estate. Today the former dining room serves as a café, while nearby Glyndor House contains art galleries. Garden paths connect the houses with planted terraces and views of the river.
