New York Fact Exchange (NYFE) helps people explore New York, save places, and build and share itineraries. This page describes the information used by these features and the choices available on nyfactexchange.com.
Accounts and saved places
When you register with an email address, you provide your name, email address and password. NYFE uses Supabase to authenticate accounts and store profiles, saved places, itineraries and email preferences. Your email is used for account confirmation, password resets and account-related support.
If you choose Google sign-in, Google supplies Supabase with basic account information, including your Google account identifier, name, email address, email-verification status and profile-picture URL. Supabase stores this information with your authentication account and uses it to sign you in. Your public NYFE creator profile is managed separately in NYFE.
NYFE stores your sign-in session in this browser so you can remain signed in after reloading or returning to the site. Supabase refreshes valid sessions automatically. Signing out removes the remembered session from this browser and clears private account information from the current view. Clearing site data, session expiry or revoked access may require you to sign in again. Keep confirmation and password-reset links private.
Itineraries and sharing
Saved itineraries can include a name, creator or brand name, description, ordered stops, stop notes, travel mode and a starting point you select. They are private until you enable sharing by link.
Anyone holding an active shared link can view the itinerary, including its name, description, creator or brand name, stop notes and any saved starting-point coordinates. Avoid putting private addresses or sensitive information in an itinerary you share. You can disable sharing and save to revoke the link, replace the link, or delete the itinerary. These actions cannot remove copies or screenshots someone has already made.
Community contributions
You can submit text, photos, videos, and article or blog links about a place. Supabase stores your submission and uploaded files. Pending submissions are available to you and authorized reviewers. After approval, your contribution, media and contributor name may appear publicly.
Only upload media you own or have permission to share. Photos are resized and re-encoded in your browser before upload, removing their original embedded metadata. Videos are uploaded as provided and may contain embedded metadata. Avoid including private or sensitive information. Article and blog links open their original websites.
You can withdraw a contribution from My contributions. Previously issued media links can remain usable for up to ten minutes, and withdrawal cannot remove copies already downloaded by others. Contact NYFE if you need uploaded files permanently removed.
Today feed and preferences
The Today feed requests public weather forecasts and alerts from the National Weather Service and event listings from NYC Open Data. Area matching uses locally served NYC ZIP Code Tabulation Areas and Neighborhood Tabulation Areas; boundaries are approximate. These services receive your IP address and normal browser request information. We do not send them your account, selected neighborhoods, ZIP codes or device location. Subway and bus alerts are retrieved and cached by NYFE from MTA; your browser contacts NYFE for these updates. Public sources may be delayed or unavailable.
Feed categories, ZIP codes and neighborhood choices are stored in this browser. For signed-in users, these choices are also saved in account metadata so they can follow the account. Transit route choices and ticker speed are saved separately in this browser. Feed choices are separate from email preferences. No independent publisher news feeds are connected.
Contact and sponsorship inquiries
Our forms send your name, email address, reason or inquiry details, message and optional email choices to NYFE through Formspree. We use these details to review and reply to your inquiry. You do not need an NYFE account to send a form.
Formspree processes the submission as the form service. Read its Privacy Policy for information about that service.
Your optional email choices
Promotions and offers, and NYFE news and updates, are separate optional choices. When you create a new account, both choices start selected. You can uncheck either one before registering and change each later in your account. On contact and sponsorship inquiry forms, both choices start unchecked. You can choose either, both or neither.
Signed-in account holders can change each account choice under Email preferences. Choices submitted with an inquiry are included with that message; contact hello@nyfactexchange.com to update those inquiry choices. Account confirmation, password-reset emails and replies to your inquiry are separate from promotional choices.
NYFE currently records these choices. Promotional campaign sending has not been connected.
Sponsorship payments
The sponsorship payment link opens a Stripe-hosted checkout. Information you enter to complete payment is submitted to Stripe through that checkout. Sending an inquiry does not make a payment. See Stripe's Privacy Policy for details about its payment service.
Maps, directions and videos
When you search for an address or place for directions or a new location, your browser sends the search text after a short pause in typing to Geoapify at api.geoapify.com to find matching addresses and places. That provider receives your IP address. Search requests do not include your NYFE account, story, files or device location. You can place and adjust a pin manually instead. Search uses OpenStreetMap data.
The public map and shared itinerary maps show an online street map by default. Your browser requests map images from Geoapify at maps.geoapify.com, revealing your IP address and the map area being viewed to that provider. The map data comes from OpenStreetMap. Public map pins can also request public video thumbnails from YouTube. You can switch the public map to NYFE's local NYC map under Map options; a local map is also available if street-map images cannot load. See the Geoapify Privacy Policy.
When you explicitly calculate a walking or driving route, the selected starting point and stop coordinates are sent to the Geoapify routing service at api.geoapify.com to calculate directions. Your account sign-in information is not included in that routing request.
YouTube video players load when you press play. Playing a video connects your browser to YouTube, which can receive information about the request and your interaction with the video. See Google's Privacy Policy. Other external links take you to services with their own privacy practices.
Public page and action counts
NYFE uses its existing Supabase service to count visits to its public pages, including the Explore map, stories, landmark and neighborhood guides. Stories and guides count clicks on links that open a public place or neighborhood on the map. On the public Explore map, NYFE counts successful walking or driving direction calculations and successful saves of public places. Private My Map pages, saved-place views, itineraries, account dialogs and sign-in callbacks are excluded.
Each aggregate NYFE counter request contains only an approved public page path and a fixed action name, with the same public project credential for every visitor. Public map requests use the path /. The aggregate NYFE counter code does not use cookies, browser storage, visitor or session identifiers. It does not send account sign-in credentials, account identifiers, email addresses, private text, locations, search terms, referrers, query strings or shared-link tokens. It respects the browser's Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track signals. Counts are approximate and do not identify unique visitors.
NYFE stores daily totals by public page and action using New York calendar dates, with a reporting window of 90 days. Older totals are removed when new valid analytics requests arrive; during an inactive period, older stored totals remain until that cleanup runs. Supabase still receives the IP address and normal network request metadata needed to handle a request, separately from these aggregate counters. Its service policies govern that platform metadata.
Optional Google Analytics
You can allow or reject Google Analytics using the analytics controls on NYFE's public pages. Google Analytics loads only after you allow it. Your choice is remembered in this browser for up to 180 days. You can change it through Analytics settings. NYFE honors Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track even when a previous choice allowed analytics.
When allowed, Google Analytics helps NYFE understand public page visits, traffic sources, returning browsers and use of public map links, saves and directions. It uses analytics cookies with browser and session identifiers. NYFE sets these cookies to expire after 90 days without renewing that expiry on each visit. Google also processes browser, device and network information and can infer an approximate location. These reports cover visitors who allow analytics.
NYFE supplies an approved public page address and fixed action names. Private My Map, saved-place and itinerary views, account dialogs and sign-in callbacks are excluded. NYFE does not supply account identifiers, email addresses, private text, searches, precise device locations, query strings or shared-link tokens to Google Analytics. Automatic measurement of forms, searches, outbound links and browser history is off. Google Signals and advertising personalization are disabled for this integration.
Rejecting analytics prevents the Google tag from loading. Withdrawing permission stops further collection by this integration and removes its analytics cookies from this browser. This does not delete information Google has already received. The separate aggregate NYFE counters described above continue according to their own privacy controls.
Google Analytics has separate retention settings from NYFE's aggregate counters. Its current event-data period is two months and its user-data period is fourteen months, with the user-data period resetting on new activity. These controls do not limit most standard aggregated reports. Read Google Analytics retention guidance and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
