Borough Park
Borough Park, also written Boro Park, grew from a suburban cottage development into a neighborhood shaped by Jewish religious and community life. Thirteenth Avenue’s shops, the New Utrecht Avenue corridor and the local library offer distinct ways to approach it.

Understanding Borough Park
Blythebourne began as a railroad-connected cottage community in the late nineteenth century. Later housing attracted Jewish families from Williamsburg and the Lower East Side. Synagogues, schools and kosher commerce expanded, followed by Hasidic families in the mid-twentieth century.
The local library began in 1904 as a small collection at Edgewood Reformed Chapel and became an official branch in 1907. After a move to Thirteenth Avenue, it received its present 43rd Street building in 1955. That sequence adds a history of civic institutions to the district’s shops and religious life.
