Western Rockaway and Broad Channel
Explore Broad Channel's local history collection, the Flight 587 Memorial near Beach 116th Street, Belle Harbor's working parish or a Breezy Point meal beside Jamaica Bay. Choose a specific destination: these communities share one NYFE map collection.

Understanding Western Rockaway and Broad Channel
The western Rockaway peninsula developed along an evolving shoreline. The City’s 2013 history describes sediment moving west toward Breezy Point and single-family house construction in Belle Harbor during the 1920s. Broad Channel’s bay setting and railway history are a separate part of this larger mapped area.
Breezy Point's St. Edmund the Martyr Church was rededicated in May 2026 after an electrical fire the previous year. The diocese says firefighters saved the structure, allowing it to be rebuilt.
Rail service crossed Jamaica Bay in 1880, and Broad Channel became a stop the following year. The historical society’s collection preserves photographs, documents and residents’ memories of the waterside community.
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge was created in the 1950s and became part of the National Park Service in 1972. Its ponds, marshes and open water make it a place for observing both seasonal migration and resident birds.
The Flight 587 Memorial was dedicated in 2006. Artist Freddy Rodríguez’s work honors the 260 people on the flight and five Belle Harbor residents killed in the 2001 crash, connecting the peninsula with the families and Dominican community affected by the loss.

Planning a visit
Choose the library, memorial or refuge as a destination first. The NPS lists the Rockaway-bound A train to Broad Channel for the refuge; check current service and the actual street approach. The memorial is a different peninsula destination. For Kennedy's, call 718-945-0202 to plan the meal and confirm parking. Its Tuesday-Friday notice directs diners to the main gatehouse for a parking token.
QPL lists wheelchair access at Broad Channel Library. Check station elevators, the memorial approach and current NPS trail information separately for the destination you choose. Contact St. Francis de Sales for access arrangements before a parish visit.
