Castle Hill-Unionport

Castle Hill’s creek-side parks and Unionport’s shopping streets offer two different East Bronx visits. Choose a waterfront landscape or the Castle Hill Avenue–Westchester Avenue commercial center before planning travel.

Understanding Castle Hill-Unionport

Castle Hill Neck lies between Westchester Creek and Pugsley Creek. Farming, estates and water transport preceded the present street network. The park history describes several successive landowners rather than a single founding moment for today’s neighborhood.

Pugsley Creek was used to ship farm supplies before filling and road construction shortened it. Preserved creek-side land now provides the clearest way to read that older geography.

The community board describes Unionport as largely a neighborhood of two-family houses beside the Castle Hill Avenue and Westchester Avenue business center. The creek-side parks show another landscape from these inland streets and the adjoining industrial area.

Places to explore

  • Castle Hill Avenue and Westchester Avenue

    Unionport commercial center

Use the public shopping streets for an everyday neighborhood visit, choosing a food or retail business from its current operator information. The inland streets offer a different outing from the creek-side parks.

  • Castle Hill Park

    Tip of Castle Hill Neck

Choose the shoreline end of the peninsula to understand the two-creek setting. This is a park visit; it does not imply access to adjoining private waterfront or a route across creek banks.

  • Pugsley Creek Park

Creek side of Castle Hill and Clason Point

The park history documents marshland preservation and successive land acquisitions. Treat it as a natural-area visit and use the designated paths and entrances shown by Parks.

Planning a visit

Plan to the Castle Hill Avenue–Westchester Avenue intersection for the commercial center, or to the chosen park entrance for the creek side. Check current MTA service for that destination.
