Understanding Jamaica Estates-Holliswood
The Jamaica Estates Association describes founders shaping a hilly, wooded landscape into winding streets, lawns and gardens. Its account identifies Tudor and Colonial houses among the community's earlier building styles.
The gatehouse on Midland Parkway also serves as a memorial to local servicemen who died in the Second World War. The association records students researching the ten names for commemorations in 2017 and 2018, and identifies a neighborhood-history plaque on the malls behind the gatehouse. These modest public features connect a residential plan with later community remembrance.
The association records planting and maintenance work on Midland Mall and Greenstreets, alongside the gatehouse restoration. These civic projects help explain the planted street spaces without treating lawns, residential entrances or private gardens as public attractions.
Holliswood has its own residential story. City Planning’s 2003 rezoning account describes rolling ground, winding streets and detached homes on large, irregular lots, with garden apartments on Pompeii Avenue. The adopted action responded to concerns about dividing large properties into several smaller house lots. This dated planning history helps explain the landscape while keeping Holliswood distinct from Jamaica Estates.
