Mapleton

Mapleton includes the blocks around its neighborhood library, school and the southern edge of Gravesend Park. The library at 17th Avenue and 60th Street has served this corner since 1955; its building is currently closed for renovation.

About Mapleton

Mapleton was part of the old town of New Utrecht. The opening of the Sea Beach subway line in 1915 helped bring development and a direct rail connection to Manhattan. Neighborhood names and boundaries vary; this guide uses the approximate split shown on its map.

The library occupied smaller premises for two decades before moving to its present building. Nearby Gravesend Park appears in a Brooklyn Public Library photograph from 1934, a record of another long-standing local place.

Places to explore

  • Mapleton Library exterior

    1702 60th Street at 17th Avenue

The branch moved here in 1955. Brooklyn Public Library is renovating the roof, facade and building systems, and expects a spring 2027 reopening. View the building from the sidewalk and check the branch page for changes.

  • Gravesend Park

    18th Avenue near 58th Street

The park extends between 18th and 19th avenues toward 55th Street. Its southern edge is close to the library; a 1934 photograph in the Brooklyn Public Library collection documents an earlier version of the site.

  • P.S. 48 Mapleton School playground

    6015 18th Avenue

The schoolyard is a local play space associated with the Mapleton School. Check posted public-access hours and school use before entering; the school building itself is not a general visitor stop.

Planning a visit

Brooklyn Public Library lists the D and N trains and B8, B9 and B11 buses for the branch. Check current service and the branch page before traveling. The spring 2027 reopening is an estimate, not a confirmed date.

Use the library exterior and public sidewalks as the starting point, then check the park and schoolyard entrances separately. The outline is an approximate editorial division, and the step-free route between stops has not been checked.
