Parkchester
Parkchester offers a street-level look at a planned apartment community, where shops and landscaped building groups were designed together. Pair the architecture and commercial streets with a reading or program visit to Parkchester Library.

Understanding Parkchester
Metropolitan Life began Parkchester as a self-contained apartment community in 1938. Richmond Shreve's plan brought landscaped open spaces, shops and recreation into the housing complex, rather than adding a shopping street after the apartments.
Its planned-community story also includes exclusion. The operator records Metropolitan Life's 1968 agreement to change rental policies that had barred nonwhite residents. That history belongs alongside the designed landscape.

Planning a visit
The operator describes its recreation programs as resident services. This guide uses public streets and the library as visitor choices; access to internal gardens, apartment buildings and residential programs requires separate confirmation from the managing operator.
