Springfield Gardens

Explore two different southeastern Queens landscapes: the cooperative planning of Rochdale Village and wetland education at Idlewild. Choose an advertised community program or a guided environmental activity, with local shops available around Rochdale’s public commercial center.

Understanding Springfield Gardens

Rochdale Village opened in 1963 on the former Jamaica Racetrack site. Its operator records the track closing in 1959 and construction proceeding from 1960 to 1962. The United Housing Foundation, led by Abraham Kazan, built the cooperative for working families. Its name recalls the English town associated with cooperative principles.

The 120-acre development was planned as a self-contained community with housing, schools and services. Today its community center serves residents and surrounding neighbors through social, cultural, recreational and educational activities. This makes a scheduled public gathering a more grounded visit than assuming residential interiors are open attractions.

At Idlewild, Eastern Queens Alliance records stewardship beginning in 2003 and the Environmental Center opening in April 2022. Wetlands here drain toward Jamaica Bay. The city’s 2025 education directory describes family and school environmental programs, including hands-on learning and stewardship.

Places to explore

  • Rochdale Village Community Center

    169-65 137th Avenue

Ask the center about an advertised event, forum or community program open to visitors. The published contact is 718-276-5700, extension 3390. The center lists accessible restrooms; room-rental information alone does not establish unrestricted daily entry.

  • Rochdale Village Shopping Mall

    169-65 137th Avenue; Mall 1

The cooperative’s current directory lists JS Diner, OB’s Bakery and OB’s Restaurant among its food businesses. A meal can accompany a planned center visit. Check the selected business directly for service times and menu rather than applying the mall’s general hours to every tenant.

  • Idlewild Environmental Science Learning Center

222-02 149th Avenue, at Springfield Lane

Choose a current nature walk, workshop or cultural program with Eastern Queens Alliance. Confirm the program meeting point and any fee with the operator.

Planning a visit

Rochdale and Idlewild are separate destinations. Choose travel directions for the program or business you intend to visit.

Check current program registration and fees with each operator. Ask Idlewild about suitable and accessible paths. Its restoration proposals do not establish that every proposed trail or boardwalk is open. Rochdale’s housing and resident parking are separate from its public commercial destinations.
