Sunnyside

Sunnyside has more than its garden-housing experiment. Rail and bridge construction helped turn the earlier farming area into a residential neighborhood, while Greenpoint Avenue and other corridors became places for shops and cultural institutions. Pair an exterior look at Sunnyside Gardens with a scheduled Thalia performance.

Understanding Sunnyside

Built mainly between 1924 and 1928, Sunnyside Gardens arranged low-rise row houses around shared interior courts. Architects Clarence Stein, Henry Wright and Frederick Ackerman worked with landscape architect Marjorie Cautley. Phipps garden apartments and the park followed by 1935.

Construction of the Queensborough Bridge, Sunnyside Yards and the rail network supported growth in the early 20th century. The neighborhood became home to successive immigrant communities. The city's commercial assessment identifies Greenpoint, Skillman and Queens Boulevard among its important shopping corridors.

Silvia Brito founded Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside in 1977. Its early work in zarzuela, combining spoken dialogue with operatic singing, later widened to plays, music and dance reflecting Latin American traditions. Some productions alternate English and Spanish performances.

Places to explore

  • Sunnyside Gardens streets

    Within the designated historic district

Compare the low building heights and the space left for gardens. The layout is the subject of the visit; it does not make private courts open to visitors.

  • Phipps Garden Apartments

    Sunnyside Gardens historic district

Look at the courtyard-apartment form from public streets. These later buildings form part of the district's development history; no interior access is offered here.

  • Thalia Spanish Theatre

    41-17 Greenpoint Avenue

Choose a production from the operator's current program and check the performance language before booking. English and Spanish dates can differ. A scheduled show is a separate visit from looking at residential architecture; theatre accessibility still needs confirmation.

Planning a visit

For Thalia, the operator lists 40th Street-Lowery Street on the 7 as a station approach. Check current MTA service. Sunnyside Gardens is a different part of the neighborhood.

Ask Thalia about individual access needs for your chosen performance.
