About Wingate

The historic name Pigtown referred to an area whose boundaries varied and overlapped part of today?s Wingate. Brooklyn Public Library?s account traces livestock and later street and housing development in the district. The historical area was not identical to this guide?s mapped outline.

The Wingate concert series began in the late 1970s. A 2022 Borough President?s Office account describes its return after pandemic disruption and recalls performers including Big Daddy Kane, Wyclef Jean and Aretha Franklin. Check current listings instead of assuming an annual event or venue.

Places to explore

  • Wingate Park

Brooklyn and Kingston avenues, Rutland Road and Winthrop Street

The park and school campus share this block. A state environmental review lists fields, courts, a playground and running track among its facilities. The park also has a concert history; check current park conditions and event entrances before visiting.

  • Pigtown historical context

Around the historic area east of New York Avenue

A Brooklyn Public Library account places part of historic Pigtown in this area and describes livestock and subsequent residential development. Its historical limits extended beyond this guide?s boundary; there is no single designated visitor entrance.

  • Kings County Hospital, nearby

451 Clarkson Avenue, south of Winthrop Street

The public hospital traces its history to 1831 and is academically affiliated with SUNY Downstate. In 2026, Fadi Khoury created the Patient?s Pathway mural for a connecting corridor. This is a care setting; public access to the mural has not been confirmed.

Planning a visit

Use Wingate Park as the public-space stop and check posted conditions. Event entrances and access arrangements can differ from ordinary park access; the Borough President?s 2022 concert directions should not be assumed to apply to later events.

The hospital campus lies nearby across Winthrop Street from the mapped neighborhood. Its corridors are care spaces, so confirm any visitor arrangements with the hospital before going.
