NYFE Summary

The city built public baths for residents whose crowded tenement homes lacked places to wash. Separate entrances led men and women into a building that combined showers, dressing rooms and a swimming pool.

Pairs of columns frame the entrances. Between them is a fountain niche with a shell above it, while carved stone bands suggest falling water. The old Free Public Baths inscription still explains the building's original purpose.
