NYFE Summary

John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Edward Rutledge came here in September 1776 to discuss peace with British admiral Richard Howe. They represented the Continental Congress. The meeting failed to resolve the dispute over American independence, and the war continued.

The house belonged to the Billopp family, who supported the British cause. British forces used it during the war. Its museum rooms are furnished to represent a home of the mid-1700s, with two parlors, a central hall and upstairs bedchambers. Tours cover both the peace conference and the household that occupied the building.
