NYFE Summary

A local association started a free library in 1899, when oystering, shipbuilding and seaside resorts supported the village. Tottenville then submitted the first application under Carnegie’s plan to fund new library buildings in the city.

A columned entrance and large rounded windows face the landscaped approach. The low building gives this public reading space the scale of a village institution. NYPL identifies it as Staten Island’s oldest library location.
