NYFE Summary

A new fire company needed this station as Washington Heights grew beyond its country estates. The building put vehicle access below the firefighters’ living quarters. Its designers later explored a similar arrangement at the larger Engine Company 33 station on Great Jones Street.

One broad arch ties the doors and windows together across the front. Light masonry around it contrasts with the red metal window frames. A carved cartouche, projecting cornice and small pediment turn the narrow station into a visible civic building.
