NYFE Summary

The regiment wore red Zouave uniforms and became known as the Red-legged Devils during the Civil War. Its later headquarters combined offices and social rooms with a large covered space for military drills. The YMCA now manages the converted recreation facility.

Unequal towers, corner projections and a long brick drill shed give the building the appearance of a fortress. The old drill floor has been adapted for basketball courts and a running track beneath its arched ceiling.
