NYFE Summary

During the Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776, Maryland soldiers repeatedly attacked British forces at the original farmhouse. They suffered heavy losses, and their commander, Lord Stirling, surrendered. Britain then occupied Brooklyn and Manhattan for seven years.

The building visitors see is a reconstruction using stones recovered from the original site. It houses an exhibition covering Lenape life, Dutch settlement, the battle and the occupation. The museum also presents changing art exhibitions and maintains gardens around the house.
