NYFE Summary

The city built free bathhouses for crowded neighborhoods where many homes lacked a bath. This one served the tenement district beside the Gowanus industrial area. It was Brooklyn’s first public bath to include a swimming pool.

Three large arched windows fill the upper front above separate entrances marked for men and women. Pale brick, stone and colored ceramic details give a public washing building an unusually formal appearance. The old Public Bath inscription remains near the roofline.
