NYFE Summary

Charles Pratt commissioned this housing for workers when many city tenements lacked light, air and indoor plumbing. The design drew on English model housing. Kitchens had running water, toilets had outside windows, and shared bathrooms occupied the basement.

Openable stairwell windows improved ventilation. A basement lecture room supplied books and newspapers, while courtyards and the roof provided space to dry laundry. Outside, rounded bays, arches and patterned brickwork break up the long blockfront.
