NYFE Summary
George Washington said farewell to his officers here after the Revolution. The tavern also hosted hearings that decided which Black Loyalists could leave with British forces. Records of those departures became known as the Book of Negroes. These events show how differently the end of the war affected the people in New York.
The museum’s Long Room recreates an eighteenth-century public dining room using historical research. It should not be mistaken for an untouched room from Washington’s visit. Other displays explain how the Departments of Foreign Affairs, War and Treasury worked here while New York served as the nation’s capital.
