NYFE Summary

This tower belonged to a fire-alarm network that used both bells and the telegraph. Watchers located smoke from elevated positions, then sent signals so firefighters could identify the district where help was needed. The city discontinued the watchtower system in 1878.

The bell continued to mark time after residents asked that it remain in use. The open iron structure makes its working parts visible: columns support several tiers around a spiral stair, with the bell suspended inside. Viewed from the park, it shows how a citywide emergency system once depended on people watching from high ground.
