NYFE Summary

A bank and safe-deposit company occupied the lower floors, while six apartments known as French flats filled the upper part. The combination served a growing Harlem commercial district after elevated trains connected it with lower Manhattan.

The building seen today includes a major reconstruction. Only two historic floors remained when that work began. Those surviving walls were retained beneath new upper stories that recall the earlier building, rather than reproduce every original detail.
