NYFE Summary
Built for the Hanover Bank, this building later housed the New York Cotton Exchange and offices of W. R. Grace & Co. It became known as India House after its use as a clubhouse. These changes connect it with several stages of the city’s trade and shipping business.
The brownstone facade has a columned doorway, triangular window pediments and a cornice supported by close-set brackets. Its symmetrical front stands apart from the taller buildings around Hanover Square.
