NYFE Summary

In 1966, members of the Mattachine Society asked for drinks here after telling the bartender they were gay. He refused to serve them. Reporters documented the refusal, turning the Sip-In into a public challenge to discrimination against gay customers.

Before the protest, the bar had already become a meeting place for artists, writers and gay men. Its rough stucco frontage joins several older building sections. The corner entrance still leads into the operating bar.
