NYFE Summary

A former school became a home for LGBTQ+ organizations in 1984. Larry Kramer’s speech here in 1987 helped spur the creation of ACT UP. Meetings, organizing and support programs made the building a gathering place during the AIDS crisis.

Keith Haring painted Once Upon a Time here for a 1989 exhibition marking twenty years since the Stonewall uprising. Visitors can see the mural, browse the queer bookstore and use the public garden. The building also continues to provide community services.
