NYFE Summary

The beacon was moved here from Sandy Hook to warn vessels near the rocky riverbank. The George Washington Bridge later rose above it, and the lighthouse eventually lost its navigational role.

Hildegarde H. Swift and Lynd Ward made the little tower the subject of a children's book. When demolition was proposed, children joined a campaign to save it. The round red tower beside the enormous bridge still makes the contrast at the heart of that story visible.
