NYFE Summary

Frederick Law Olmsted used this farm to try planting, drainage and road-layout ideas before his better-known public landscapes. He grew both native and imported trees and rearranged parts of the grounds to shape views toward Raritan Bay.

The farmhouse and a small park are what remain of a much larger agricultural property. The later owners, naturalist Carlton Beil and his wife Louise, wanted the site preserved. New York City acquired it, and a local friends group now works to preserve the house and explain its history.
