NYFE Summary

Harlem funeral director Rodney Dade and his partners created this cemetery when discrimination kept Black families out of many burial grounds or limited their choices. Its paths curve through a landscaped setting planned for remembrance. The cemetery still serves the community that established it.

People buried here include blues singer Mamie Smith, jazz trumpeter Tommy Ladnier and baseball player and writer Sol White. Near the entrance, a bronze relief honors Frederick Douglass. Sculptor Angus McDougall designed the monument, which was dedicated in 1961.
