NYFE Summary

Alice Austen used photography to record New York street life and the private lives of women. She carried heavy camera equipment on bicycle trips and developed photographs in a closet darkroom upstairs. Her work included immigrants at the waterfront and social gatherings with friends.

Austen shared this home with her partner, Gertrude Tate, for about thirty years. Her photographs also record her relationship with Tate. The house museum presents Austen’s photography and her relationship with Tate as connected parts of her life.
