NYFE Summary

This institute brought education and civic services together under one roof. Its original charter welcomed people regardless of race, creed or religion. It housed a library, a savings bank, a courtroom and the sheriff’s office. Two jail cells survive inside.

A free kindergarten opened here in 1870. When the building faced sale and demolition in 1980, residents organized a successful court challenge. The institute now serves as a community cultural center with a museum and programs that continue its educational role.
