NYFE Summary

The African Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal congregation bought this building in 1854. Its members had left a church that imposed racial segregation. Here they sheltered people escaping slavery and made the church a center of abolitionist activity.

Harriet Tubman spoke to the congregation in 1865. The building later served educational and commercial uses. It now houses university admissions and career offices, while its columns, broad steps and triangular front remain visible along the campus commons.
