Melrose

Melrose’s Hub is a meeting point of shopping streets, transit and South Bronx cultural life. Start at Roberto Clemente Plaza, then choose an outdoor park or a scheduled music visit.

Understanding Melrose

Third Avenue’s shops, breweries and theaters grew during nineteenth-century German settlement. The elevated railway accelerated the district’s commercial development.

After disinvestment, local organizations including Nos Quedamos worked on housing and community gardens. That rebuilding is part of the neighborhood’s history, alongside its older retail buildings.

Places to explore

  • Roberto Clemente Plaza and the Hub

Third Avenue and East 149th Street

The plaza offers a place to sit within the junction of Third, Willis and Melrose avenues and East 149th Street. Explore the shopping streets as a working neighborhood center, not a fixed list of endorsed businesses.

  • St Mary’s Park

    Nearby, east of the Hub

The hill landscape was once connected to Adrian Janes’s ironworks estate before it became one of the early Bronx parks. Choose the paths and recreation spaces as a separate outdoor visit.

  • Bronx Music Hall

South Bronx cultural venue; check exact destination before traveling

WHEDco's venue presents concerts, classes and exhibitions. Pick a current program and confirm tickets or exhibition access with the operator.
