North Corona

On 107th Street, the home Louis and Lucille Armstrong chose in 1943 and the modern Louis Armstrong Center offer different ways to encounter his music and everyday life. Choose a preserved domestic interior, an exhibition or both.

Understanding North Corona

A 2003 City Planning study traces Corona from West Flushing, connected to the Long Island Rail Road in 1854, to its Corona name in 1872. Early growth was mainly farther south. After World War I, elevated rail service helped development extend through North Corona.

The Armstrongs remained in the Corona house for the rest of Louis's life. Preserving the rooms and belongings gives the neighborhood's musical history a domestic setting rather than only a stage or concert venue.

The same study describes a varied housing landscape, with larger apartment buildings west of Junction Boulevard and smaller houses to the east, alongside retail streets.

The Center and the historic-house garden path are wheelchair accessible. The house tour requires two sets of steep stairs and extended standing. Visitors unable to take the house tour can request a video; ask the museum about the arrangements for your visit.
