Sheepshead Bay-Manhattan Beach-Gerritsen Beach
Along this coast, an old restaurant building, a waterfront library and a college art museum provide three different ways to visit. Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach and Gerritsen Beach retain separate identities and histories. Choose the institution or shoreline destination before planning transport across the combined map area.

Understanding Sheepshead Bay-Manhattan Beach-Gerritsen Beach
Resort development and land filling changed this coast. Gerritsen Beach developed as a planned community in the 1920s, and many bungalows were adapted over time. Sheepshead Bay’s surviving former Lundy’s building records another phase of waterfront development and dining history.
Gerritsen Beach’s library history runs from a small 1932 branch to a purpose-built waterfront facility in 1997. After Hurricane Sandy, repairs restored the branch over eleven months. Its arched entry, clock tower and large window facing Shell Bank Channel connect civic design with this low-lying coastal setting.
Kingsborough’s art gallery began exhibiting in its present Arts and Sciences Building location in 1976. It became the Kingsborough Art Museum in 2016 and presents faculty, student and other curated exhibitions. The institution adds a cultural visit in Manhattan Beach beyond the separate beach-park destination.

Planning a visit
BPL lists B/Q connections and the B31 for Gerritsen Beach Library; the trains are not at its entrance. Check current connections for the library, and confirm Kingsborough’s campus visitor arrangements separately.
Gerritsen Beach Library is listed as fully accessible, while Sheepshead Bay Library is listed as not accessible. Museum physical access and campus entry need direct confirmation. The separate Manhattan Beach Park requires current Parks entrance and seasonal swimming guidance.
Visitor update
NYC Health currently lists city public beaches as closed for the season. Check the current beach-status map and Parks guidance before planning any future swim.
