Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village

Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village are residential communities beside the East River. View the housing from surrounding public streets and explore nearby Stuyvesant Cove Park, where Solar One connects the waterfront with environmental learning.

Understanding Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village

Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village were part of the east-side waterfront's shift from industry to large residential developments in the late 1940s. Metropolitan Life developed the housing. The two communities remain distinct properties.

Solar One links city-owned Stuyvesant Cove Park with environmental education and stewardship. Its education center opened in 2025.

At the adjoining northern edge, the Asser Levy bathhouse opened in 1908 during the campaign for municipal washing facilities in a city where many tenements lacked bathrooms. Its Roman-bath-inspired architecture adds a public-health history beside the later housing developments.
