Tremont
Tremont’s name recalls three hills, while Walter Gladwin Park and the library show successive layers of civic history. Choose the park’s surviving staircase and the Carnegie library exterior for a focused neighborhood visit.

Understanding Tremont
The older village developed from rural land as rail connections grew. Parks and the LPC link the Tremont name to Fairmount, Mount Eden and Mount Hope.
Old Bronx Borough Hall once stood in what is now Walter Gladwin Park. The building was demolished, but the grand staircase survives. The park’s current name honors the Bronx’s first Black elected governmental official.
