Whitestone-Beechhurst

Choose a deli sandwich in Whitestone, a program at the library, or a service at St. Luke. Beechhurst's theatrical history adds another layer to the combined map area, with the private Hammerstein house presented as historical context.

Understanding Whitestone-Beechhurst

LPC’s Arthur Hammerstein House report describes Beechhurst in the 1920s as a residential enclave for members of the theatrical community. The former Whitestone Landing railroad station connected it with Manhattan. Producer Arthur Hammerstein commissioned Dwight James Baum to design his 1924 house, named Wildflower after a Broadway production.

The report records estates giving way to apartment towers and the arrival of the Throgs Neck Bridge in 1961. The surviving house helps explain this transition, but its historic status does not establish public access or a public waterfront viewpoint.

Community Board 7 lists Beechhurst separately in its neighborhood description. St. Luke’s own welcome page records parish history reaching back to 1870 and locates it on Clintonville Street. Neither source makes the two neighborhood names interchangeable.

Places to explore

  • St. Luke Roman Catholic Church

    16-34 Clintonville Street

Consult the parish's worship and visitor information before an interior visit; no public sightseeing hours are promised here.

  • Whitestone Library

    151-10 14th Road

QPL lists extended Wi-Fi around this branch, available even when the building is closed. An indoor visit still needs the current branch hours; the wireless service is separate from entering the building.

  • Cherry Valley Deli & Grill

    12-29 150th Street

The merchant menu lists a Coyote hero with chicken cutlet, mozzarella, bacon, waffle fries and ranch dressing, and a Couch of fries, mozzarella and brown gravy. Use the linked current menu for a specific meal choice; prices, hours and item availability need checking before travel.
