About Windsor Terrace
The Prospect Avenue firehouse was built in 1895 for Brooklyn’s professional fire service. Architect Peter J. Lauritzen gave it a brick-and-limestone facade and a round corner turret. It remains a working firehouse, with the architecture visible from the street.
Library service began with a collection in a pharmacy in 1922, later moved into two abandoned streetcars and then a mobile library. A permanent branch designed by Gustave W. Iser opened in 1969 after construction of an expressway exit delayed the project.
