Property managers will unlock the new bins by card or app, while automated trucks handle collection.
Brooklyn Community District 2 is getting more than 700 Empire Bins after the first residential containers were installed in Brooklyn Heights on October 29. The rollout covers neighborhoods from Boerum Hill and Downtown Brooklyn to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.
Buildings with more than 30 apartments must use the on-street containers; properties with 10 to 30 units can participate by opting in. Managers will open them with a key card or smartphone app, and sanitation crews will empty them using automated side-loading trucks.
