NYFE Summary
The lower part of this building began as the Merchants’ Exchange, replacing one lost in the Great Fire of 1835. It later became the United States Custom House. National City Bank then acquired it and added a second tier of columns above the first.
The two colonnades use different capitals: scroll-shaped Ionic capitals below and leafy Corinthian capitals above. Their stacked arrangement joins the older exchange with the later bank expansion. The former banking hall now serves as an event venue.
