NYFE Summary

Alexander Turney Stewart brought many kinds of merchandise into a large marble store, using the image of an Italian palace for a commercial building. Its success helped establish a model for later department stores.

Successive additions extended the matching street fronts. Columns, pilasters and rows of arched windows unify the different sections. The newspaper The Sun later occupied the building from 1919 to 1952, giving it another lasting name.
