NYFE Summary

Alice and Irene Lewisohn founded this experimental theatre as part of Henry Street Settlement. It staged drama, music and dance by contemporary artists. Alwin Nikolais later developed a dance company here, and the New Federal Theatre brought plays by writers of color and women to its stage.

The adjoining arts center expanded that work with galleries, classes and spaces for artists. Its programs continue to connect neighborhood residents with visiting performers and visual artists. The older playhouse remains part of this larger arts complex.
