NYFE Summary
Black worshippers who left the predominantly white First Baptist Church founded this congregation. It moved north as the city’s Black community grew. In Harlem, Adam Clayton Powell Sr. and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. linked religious leadership with social service and civil-rights organizing.
The church stands beside a community house built for that wider work. The sanctuary contains stained glass and a marble pulpit. The congregation continues its worship and community programs here.
