NYFE Summary

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg collected books, manuscripts and art documenting Black history around the world. Born in Puerto Rico, he moved to New York and spent decades building the collection. The library acquired it in 1926, strengthening a research division established the previous year. Schomburg later became its curator.

The center continues that work through research collections, exhibitions and public programs. Its holdings record Black life across countries and through different forms, including writing, photographs and art. Exhibitions and events make parts of those collections available beyond the reading room.
