NYFE Summary
Long before this building, the congregation supported abolition and the Underground Railroad. Its move north from lower Manhattan followed the city’s Black population, and the present church became its sixth home.
In Harlem, pastor Benjamin Robeson led a civil-rights campaign, and his brother Paul used the pulpit for social and political activism. The front pairs rough gray stone with pale terra cotta around a large pointed window.
