NYFE Summary

Sixteen sculptors and ten painters helped turn this courthouse into a statement about the law. Figures of lawmakers and allegorical subjects line the roof above marble columns and porches. The judges chose a site away from the lower courts whose decisions they would review.

Inside, murals, stone paneling and stained glass continue the decoration. The courtroom dome has sixteen radiating panels with symbols that include the scales of justice and a lamp of knowledge. This remains a working appeals court for Manhattan and the Bronx.
