NYFE Summary

The regiment was formed by Irish New Yorkers and became known as the Fighting Sixty-Ninth. Its headquarters combined administrative rooms with a large covered drill floor. In 1913, that space hosted the Armory Show of modern European and American art.

The architects chose a symmetrical front and a monumental entrance arch instead of the medieval towers used on many earlier armories. A large drill shed rises behind the lower Lexington Avenue building.
