NYFE Summary
Art students founded an independent school in 1875 after breaking with the National Academy of Design. Instead of a fixed curriculum, instructors led their own studios. Georgia O’Keeffe and Jackson Pollock were among the artists who studied here.
The building began as a shared home for several arts organizations. The League became its sole owner in 1941. Today the second-floor Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery shows changing exhibitions and hosts lectures and discussions.
