NYFE Summary
The institution was established in 1956 to help Americans understand Asia. Its first president, John D. Rockefeller 3rd, left an art collection that became the basis of the museum’s traditional holdings. Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller’s later bequest added more works.
The collection includes Chinese ceramics, Indian bronzes and Southeast Asian sculpture. The museum later began collecting contemporary art, including video, photography and new media. Changing exhibitions bring historic and recent work into the galleries.
